Wife accused of beating her for joining Awami League, pressuring her to divorce

Desk report

Awami League worker. She wrote ‘Joy Bangla’ on Facebook. Therefore, local Jubo Dal leaders and workers have been accused of pressuring her husband to divorce her. Not only that, they also beat up the man. Such an incident took place in Rajshahi on Saturday evening.

The victim couple is Mizanur Rahman and Bina Majumder, residents of Hazrapukur Mahalla of Chandrima Police Station in the city. Mizanur Rahman is a businessman, his wife Bina is a housewife. Bina is a worker of Shahmakhdum Police Station in the city. She had contested the reserved women councilor posts of Wards 19, 20 and 21 in the 2013 and 2023 City Corporation elections.

On Saturday evening, some leaders and activists, including Md. Soni, a former member of Shah Makhdum Thana Jubo Dal, were accused of beating Mizanur Rahman in the neighborhood field. It was Mizanur Rahman’s son’s birthday that day. A function was organized at his house. He was beaten up when he went out of the house for personal work. Later, the police went there after receiving the information.

After the incident, Mizanur Rahman told Ajker Patrika, ‘I was walking. Then they saw me and said, “They eat my wife’s earnings.” I protested and said, “I work all day. Why should I eat my wife’s earnings?” Then they told me, “If you don’t leave your wife, don’t send her away from here, then there is news.” When I asked why I should leave, they abused me and started beating me.’

Mizanur, the victim, showed that he had injuries on his hands, head, ears and forehead due to the beating.

Mizanur’s wife Bina Majumder told Ajker Patrika, ‘A few days ago, I posted a post on Facebook on the occasion of December 16. I wrote ‘Joy Bangla’ there. Soni called me and said, “You can’t write this. It will be very bad if you write it.” I said, “When the party was in power, I didn’t do anything bad to anyone. Even after that, if I feel bad, then it will be.” Then I hung up the phone.’

She also said, ‘My husband was going to the salon. They caught him and said, “Your wife is an Awami League member, you are eating your wife’s earnings. You will leave your wife.” My husband does not belong to any party. There was an argument between them. Hearing the shouting, I went. Sonny’s son used to call me Amma a few days ago. I told him, “What’s the matter, Sonny? What are these?” He said, “No Awami League song will be played. “I said, ‘I will support Awami League, I will support Awami League, I will support Awami League even if I die. Whether the party is in power or not.’ Then she raised her hand against my husband.”

Bina said, ‘But BNP has not come yet. The coordinators said – they understand equal rights. Why did the difference between Awami League and BNP arise here? Even though the party is in power, I have not done anything wrong. Why should this happen to me? My only fault is – I am Awami League. That is why my husband is being pressured to leave me. How is this? What is the relationship between the party and the family? Those who have done wrong will be punished. Those for whom this decline of Awami League is happening, let them be tried. Why are those who have done wrong harassed? What kind of justice is this? We are now terrified. We want security.’

When asked about the allegations, former Jubo Dal leader Md. Soni said, ‘Bina Majumder is creating confusion by posting on Facebook in favor of Awami League. That is why I was telling her husband. Then a few boys beat her up a bit. We have settled this. The allegation that he pressured his wife to divorce him is not true.’

In this regard, Matiar Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chandrima police station in the city, told Ajker Patrika, ‘I sent police to the spot yesterday evening after receiving news of the trouble. The locals have resolved it. That is why the police have returned. If anyone has any complaint in this regard, we will investigate it.’
